How to play Open Face Chinese Poker?

Chinese Poker is fun and an exciting game enjoyed by both professional and amateur poker players all around the world. It can also go by the names “Russian Poker”, “Pusoy” or “Pepito” in different countries.

The Basics

Chinese Poker can be played by two, three or four players. The game is played with a standard fifty-two card deck. Each player is dealt thirteen cards, and has to set their cards into three poker hands:

  • Top Hand (three cards)
  • Middle Hand (five cards)
  • Bottom Hand (five cards)

Each player needs to set their cards in such the following way:

  • Top hand – strong
  • Middle hand – stronger than the top hand
  • Bottom hand – the strongest of all three hands

Should the player fail to follow the hand ranking sequence, their hand is fouled and perceived as the lowest possible hand. The objective of the game is to win as many points from opponent(s) as possible by either having a higher ranked hand, or if applicable by scoring royalties.

Classic Open Face Chinese Poker Rules:

Classic Open Face Chinese Poker (OFC) is the most common Chinese Poker variation in which the players need to set up a Chinese Poker hand out of five cards they receive during the first dealing round and the remaining eight cards they are dealt one by one every other round.

    Objective

The objective of the game is to set the strongest hand in order to beat opponents and collect the most units. The player with the most units at the end of the hand wins.

    Gameplay

Players arrange thirteen cards into three poker hands – two of five cards and one of three – trying to beat the corresponding poker hands made by their opponents. OFC is played by two to four players. A standard fifty-two card deck is used and the game can be played with different stakes per unit, for instance €0.10, €1.00, €5.00, €100.00, etc.

OFC is not played per individual hand, but per complete round of hands. The number of hands per round equals the number of players at the table. The game uses a button to determine each player’s position so that every player gets the button once in every round.

The player on the left of the button acts first for each dealing round during the hand. The remaining players act clockwise until the button is reached. All players are required to play a complete round of the game. In case of a bonus hand (fantasyland, see description below), the button stays in the same position for the bonus round. An extra hand is added for each bonus hand played during that round.

First dealing round: Initial five face up cards are dealt to all players

To start the game, the players are dealt five cards face up in turn, starting with the first position. After the first player sets their cards anywhere in their bottom, middle or top hand, the second player gets their first five open cards. This process repeats until the last player has set their first five cards. Any of the cards received may be placed in any of the player’s three OFC hands.

Subsequent dealing rounds: One face up card per round is dealt until each player has 13 cards

On their turn each player is dealt one more card face up and positions the card into their bottom, middle, or top hand. The process repeats until all players have thirteen total cards and a complete Chinese Poker hand. Standard Chinese Poker rules apply, bottom hand> middle hand> top hand, otherwise the hand is fouled (invalid). Once the player positions their cards and finishes the turn, they can no longer change the position of the cards between the bottom, middle and top hands.

    Fantasyland

In Chinese poker games where fantasyland rules apply, players need to place QQ or better for their top hand while not fouling. Then the player enters the OFC bonus round in which their opponents play regular OFC, while the fantasyland player is dealt thirteen cards at once and can set them like a regular Chinese Poker hand.

In fantasyland, the player's cards remain unseen to other players until the end of the round. During the fantasyland phase, regular OFC bonuses are scored for all players in the hand. The player can also repeat fantasyland in OFC Classic if they make Three of a kind in the top hand, Full House in the middle hand or Four of a kind in the bottom hand.

    Showdown and scoring

The total score in a hand for each player is calculated by comparing each player's hand with all other players’ hands. These comparisons are done sequentially and clockwise and start with the first player left of the button. Player stacks are updated after each comparison and their updated stacks are used for the score calculation in the following comparison. No player can earn more points or lose more points in any score calculation than their starting stack used for that calculation.

Below are the most common scoring options for OFC. If any of these scoring options is changed for a specific game, the active scoring for that game will be displayed in the lobby details.

    Hand rankings...

    General game rules:

    Hand rankings

Straight Flush: Five suited cards in sequence.

Highest rank at the top of the sequence wins when players tie. A royal flush is the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of any suit. A royal flush is an unbeatable hand.
Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank, and one side card (kicker)..

Highest-ranking Four of a Kind breaks a tie. Full House: Three cards of the same rank, and two cards of a different, matching rank.
Full House with the highest ranking three cards breaks a tie. Flush: Five suited cards.

If multiple players have a flush, subsequent card rankings will be used, one at a time, to determine the winner. If all five cards are identical, the pot will be split. The suit itself is never used to break a tie in poker.

    Straight: Five cards in sequence.

Highest-ranking card at the top of the sequence breaks the tie. Note: The Ace is the only card that may be used at the top or bottom of the sequence. A,K,Q,J,T is the highest (Ace high) straight; A,2,3,4,5 is the lowest (Five high) straight.

Three of a kind: Three cards of the same rank, and two unrelated side cards.

Highest ranking three of a kind breaks a tie. Two pair: Two matched-rank cards, two different matched-rank cards, and one side card.

Highest pair breaks a tie. The second pair or side card will break a tie if certain cards are identical. One pair: Two matched-rank cards, and three unrelated side cards.

Highest pair breaks a tie. The player with the first superior side card will break a tie if pairs are identical.

High card: Any hand that does not qualify under a category listed above.

In the event of a tie: Highest card breaks a tie. If first cards are identical, the first superior card wins the game.

Mobile maximum number of tables allowed

Players using the mobile client can open only 3 tables simultaneously. If players are registered for a tournament and have 3 tables opened when that tournament starts, they must close one of the 3 tables. After closing a table, the tournament table will automatically appear.

No time bank is configured at this time Disconnects and Sitting Out Players accept all responsibility for the consequences arising from Internet disconnections and time lags when the problem is not due to a TonybetPoker server crash

If the TonybetPoker server crashes, the latest cash-game hand will be cancelled

Once disconnected, players must reconnect to the server within 90 seconds. If players do not reconnect after 90 seconds regular time will begin. Cards will be placed automatically if the player is still absent after regular time.

Play will resume even if the player has not returned for the following hand. Once the player’s regular time ends, cards will be placed automatically.

During tournament play, disconnected players sit out all hands until they restore the connection.
